If the water is going to be reasonably clean ( not too many trees close by ), you could try a duel gradient cartridge using only one housing.

This cartridge has an external filtration size of 25 microns and merges to a final filtration of 1 micron at the inner core. Many people use these cartridges and it can be an economical method avoiding the need for a second housing & cartridge.

Made in Canada the UV250 is the ideal answer for small to medium sized homes wanting to treat the incoming water to the house.

Two sediment pre filters remove dirt, sediment and pollen down to one micron in size while the UV250 will eliminate harmful bacteria and viruses at flows up to 26 litres per minute.

The installation of small 10 inch housings under the sink with filter cartridges and a small UV system is an economical method to purify water for consumption only, and does not result in purifying water used in baths, showers or toilet.

The room taken up under the sink is not great and will not unduly affect the use of the cupboard space. This type of system requires at least 140 KPA to work so is not usually satisfactory on gravity feed supplies.

The 1 micron filter can be either a standard filter or carbon filter to remove chemicals as well as sediment.

Water Distillation

Very effective at giving pure water no matter what the quality of the incoming supply is.

Water is boiled - the steam collected - then condensates back to water again. All contaminants are left in the boiling chamber.

Distillers do require some planning and patience as the water is slow to process ( between 5 & 7 hours depending on the starting temperature of the water ), and do require the boiling chamber to be cleaned after use. The cooling fan does make a little noise ( similar to a fan heater ), and bench space is used.

Some people build a shelf in the laundry or garage to remove the Distiller from the kitchen. Collected water is usually poured into a storage container and either left on the bench or placed in the fridge to cool.

All models have an operating cost of around 60 cents per 4 litres pure water in power.

Ceramic Filter

A ceramic filter can be used in either a bench top or under sink filter housing.

It combines activated carbon for the removal of chemicals with an absolute 0.4 micron ceramic cartridge, which is so fine bacteria will not pass through it.

As the cartridge blocks up with sediment, the cartridge is cleaned by scraping the sides of the ceramic part with a knife or flat tool to remove the outer layer of ceramic material. This can be done several times.

If there is a lot of sediment in the supply water, a pre filter may be required to enhance the life of the ceramic filter.

A minimum of 40 PSI ( 280 KPA ) water pressure is required to allow the water to pass through the cartridge.

Notes On Rural Water Quality

To Purify Roof Water We Need To Consider The Following:

Removal of leaf material from gutters so water entering the tank is as clean as possible.
Having mesh around any holes into the tank to prevent animals entering the tank.
Final filtration and / or purification of the water.

Tank water can be reasonably clean, but in practice it often contains traces of pesticides and herbicides from agricultural sprays as well as dirt and sediment from material washed off the roof.

Giardia & Cryptosporidium cysts can also be deposited on the roof by birds, cats and possums. If organic material such as leaves and bird manure enter the tank then we have the added problem of both general and faecal bacterial growth inside the tank.

The General Principles Of Rural Water Treatment

Organic Material & Sediment: Filter using one or more filter housings and cartridges to remove the solid material. Strainers are available to remove large particles and cartridges are available to remove material from over one millimetre right down to one micron. ( The smallest particle we can visually see with the eye is around 20 microns ).
Chemicals: Removed by using a filter with Activated Carbon.
Giardia & Cryptosporidium: Must be filtered using a one micron mesh filter. Giardia is resistant to chemicals and most UV light frequencies so must be filtered.
Bacteria: Depending on the situation this can be controlled by either regular dosing of the water with 'HydroPure' ( a safe liquid disinfectant ) to kill bacteria or by using ultraviolet light. There is also a purification cartridge which can be used at a point of use situation ( typically the kitchen sink ) to purify and remove bacteria. An ultra violet light system is the most convenient method in most cases.
