Whole House Systems

Urban Whole House Purification

Urban Whole House purification systems require the installation of an Activated Carbon filter at the point of entry to the house. Activated Carbon is very effective at removing chlorine, organic chemicals such as pesticides & herbicides, sediment, algae, PCB's from plastic pipe, and bad odour and taste.

Options are also available to remove Giardia & Cryptosporidium cysts from the water

Water used for watering gardens, washing machines and dishwashers should ideally be separated prior to the purification system, to enhance the life of the cartridge. This is easily done when building a new house, but can be impracticable for an existing house.

The two ways to install Whole House Activated Carbon Purifiers are:

1. Replaceable Cartridges.
2. Loose Back-Washable Carbon.

Replaceable Cartridge Systems

These systems are probably the most common because they are generally easy to set up and maintain.

By using a 1 micron sediment filter before the carbon cartridge, they are also effective at removing fine dirt and sediment as well as Giardia and Cryptosporidium cysts.

Their main disadvantage is they have lower maximum flow rates than "in line" loose carbon filters and are more prone to blockage from sediment in the water supply, so if fine sediment removable
is desired, a pre-filter before the carbon cartridge is recommended.

Small House Setup

Two Big White 10" Jumbo housings
with 1 micron Pre-filter

Big White 10" Housing: Housing Height: 350mm
  Housing Width: 190mm
Max Flow: 10 litres / Minute
  Cartridge life: 130,000 litres ( Approx )
Price:
Big White 10" Jumbo housing: $ 219.00
Matrikx 10" Jumbo CTO cartridge: $ 110.00
Total: $ 329.00

or with 1 micron pre filter (as shown) $ 583.00
( Replacement pre filter ) $   35.00

1. If the water source is suspected to carry much physical dirt or sediment, it is recommended to install a pre filter prior to the carbon cartridge ( as shown above ) to enhance the life of the carbon cartridge. Otherwise dirt may clog the cartridge before the media has been used completely.

2. The pressure loss through the filter at normal flow rates is usually less than 5 PSI ( 35 KPA ) so most households will not notice any significant pressure reduction until the pre-filter cartridge blocks up.

3. Cartridges for the small house option are typically replaced between 10 to 12 months depending on the amount of use and quality of the source water.

4. Cartridges are replaced when either bad taste and odour is noted or the water flow slows down due to the cartridge blocking up with sediment.

Note: Maximum flow rate refers to the maximum recommended speed through the filter for the water to be purified well. It does NOT mean the water is physically restricted to this speed.

Larger Houses and Commercial Buildings

Back-Washable High Flow Carbon Systems

These systems are the ultimate method for removable of chemicals as they allow better performance at high water flows. They use a fibreglass casing with refillable, loose Activated Carbon granules.

The loose carbon is normally back-washed (water is reversed through the filter) at least once per week to remove any collected dirt and sediment and to enhance the active life of the media. This back washing can be done either manually or by automatic timer.

The automatic option does require a 240 volt power source in the area to operate the timer. Different tank sizes are available depending on the required flow rate.

General Notes Regarding The Above Systems

1. The above prices exclude pipe fittings required to install the system, which will vary from house to house, but you should allow around $ 200 - $ 300 for labour and fittings assuming you have exposed pipes to work from.

2. If the water pressure in your area is likely to exceed 90 PSI ( 630 KPA ) a pressure limiting valve is recommended ( approx $ 120.00 ). These are installed in most new homes automatically now. Please ask us if you don't know your pressure.

3. The above units will not remove dissolved minerals including calcium. If this is required to be removed a "water softener" is required in addition to the above carbon filters. Please ask us for details if required.

Please feel free to contact us at any time to clarify any points or ask any further questions.
